Approaching The Scene 308: Why Nikon's Zf & Z6iii's Manual Focus Modes Are Revolutionary
(LINKS BELOW): I’m really excited the Z6iii has this built in like the Zf before it. It’s hard to overstate what a boon this is for manual focus lenses. I remember first reading the press release on Nikon’s Zf and wondering “what is manual focus subject detection?” I went digging and found that: the AF system will identify subjects (like eyes), track them, give focus confirmation (green box), and allow you to zoom to 100% to perfect focus while tracking them. Seriously? I instantly ordered the Voigtländer 50mm F1.0 Z-mount I’d tested and loved last summer. How well does this all work? Really well. Let me demonstrate with this video.

    Bank C - Landscape The auto bracketing burst function is assigned to the FN1 button and this button needs to be depressed whilst all the shots are taken. But, when shooting landscape on a tripod, we don't really want to introduce any vibration by depressing the shutter release - so we assign a 0.5 shutter delay to avoid any shake, when taking any shots. However, having assigned the bracket burst to the F1 button, we actually need to hold it down during the burst ....... as such this seems counterintuitive, since we need to avoid any vibration/shake when taking the images for the sequence of auto bracketing. It seems like the FN1 needs a 'hold' option (as in 'recall function hold'), but this doesn't seem to be an option unfortunately. Perhaps I missed something or misunderstood the reason for burst bracketing being assigned to the FN1 button for Landscape in Bank C, but I can't see the benefit? Other than that, everything in the video set up is simply amazing and way better than anything I could create. Thank you so much for all your awesome guidance and support, which is very much appreciated 😀😀😀😀

    Hudson, Watching this long after the ZF’s announcement. I’d held off on the ZF awaiting the Z6iii, but now seeing the 6iii, it feels like so much overkill from what i need. So, even though the grip is funky/bad, i’ll likely go with it and the Small rig add on. BUT, have you tried any of the rear thumb grip accessories? When i had a Fuji X100, i found the thumb grip was enough to make it more usable. I’m wondering about doing the same with the ZF…like maybe one of the Wood glue on ones, or the metal bracket that fits in the hot shoe bracket. Any experience trying these? Thanks

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto

      I'm not a fan of thumb grips at all. My thumb is busy when I use a camera. I don't ever keep it up there. They just seems to be unneeded and in the way to me. I love the Zf with the small rig grip. It's fantastic for me. No other need.

      It absolutely works for tracking the eye and zooming in, but you do not get the green confirmation box. Honestly it's the instant zoom to the detected eye and tracking of that eye as you focus that matters. I tested it for other's asking the same question in the feed (answers are there too) with my 105 2.5 AI from the 70s. Worked great. Sorry, not going to do another video. You'll need to trust me.

    Recently I have been on a buying spree for the new Nikon lenses. So far I purchased the 85 1.2 and the 50 mm 1.2 and the 24 to 70 2.8 and I just received my copy of this 135 1.8 plena. There's something magical about this 135 plena and I shot a bunch of bird pictures outside and then came inside and shot a bunch of portrait pictures of my dogs. Of course I shot all of them at 1.8 and I have to say that I am astonished by the quality that this lens. I thought that the $135 mm focal range was going to be strange but to be frank it's not really that bad. Yes you need to stand back a little more than you normally would however the end result of the photographs is worth the slight inconvenience of having to be a little further from the subject. I highly recommend this lens. Not sure really what magic sauce they put in this lens but it's obviously above and beyond just an S lens from Nikon. Worth every penny and is my new favorite lens for shooting pictures on my Z9.

    Hi. I have a question about the this manual focus subject tracking feature. Does it work if you put some old auto-focus Nikon D glass on the camera? I ask because we lost the auto-focus capability for these lenses in Z bodies. I have kept two of my all-time favorites to use on my DSLRs (the 85mm 1.4 and the 200mm f/4 macro). How I'd love to resurrect my 85 for portraits if the camera can take care of the focusing in manual mode, given that it's released in firmware for my Z8.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto 4 дні тому

      It won't give the green square confirmation, but... It will track the eye and let you zoom in to 100% at the press of a button while continuing to keep the eye centered as you nail critical focusing. It's the zoom part that matters most honestly.

    One issue I've had with the voightlander and the zf is the shutter speed. 1.0 on a sunny day and 100 base ISO is limiting to get the creative effects I want without an ND filter. Hoping (at least with electronic shutter) that the faster shutter on the Z6 iii helps. Otherwise I'm loving that ability.

    I was a bit disappointed, due to the price. I think the Z6III does not offer the price gap difference, compared to the ZF. You can almost have 2 ZF bodies and start a business, rather than one Z6III. The Z8 being promoted as is, also costs around 6800€ for two bodies, while the Z6III will be around 6000€, and will depreciate much faster. The math does not add up, unless you REALLY need Video, but the thing is the lack of redundancy in video recording (to the card) already makes the Nikon System not a favourite for hardcore videographers. Not sure if anyone agrees with this, but yeah, bang for buck I would go ZF or Z8 all the way.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto 4 дні тому

      The Z6iii is going to be the low light powerhouse. The 2nd native, virtually noise free gain setting appears to be 3200 ISO! It's also going to bring speed and customizion for those on a budget that don't love the classic form factor of the ZF. The z8/9 are certainly the action/landscape choice although a high megapixel Z7iii could steal landscape. I see the z6iii as the camera for low light handheld, stars, insane 4k video, and price conscious buyers that want speed and custom user settings. Price seems pretty locked in. Nikon is essentially competing with its own other bodies (ZF & Z8). I love my ZF too much to part with it, but the 6iii is clearly more capable. I'm sure the 6iii will be my video machine of choice. I'll keep one till the Z7iii launches (assuming it does) and trade up then.

      That's certainly incorrect! I have an L bracket on my ZF. Rick has an L Bracket on his A7r5. My friends with R5s have L brackets. What I can't stand is the mess of a tilt system we have on the Z8 and Z9. It's atrocious to use and a fragile weak point. When I'm on my L-bracket vertical above my head (common shooting panos over an obstacle) there is no way to tilt it down. Period. Tilt screens allow you to protect the LCD when not in use. They are more robust and they are far more versatile by allowing far more angles of view. I've had brackets on every camera I've owned since the D70. The L bracket builders like Kirk and RRS have no issue designing around the inevitable move to flip screens.

      It's fine to hold a personal opinion. It's not fine to make sweeping, incorrect statements. I vicerally hate the mechanism on the Z8 which I find a near useless, fragile mess, but I don't say everyone will. There are a great many of us who appreciate the superiority of flip screens. That's why all the brands are moving to them.

      The first thing Rick did when his a7r5 arrived was flip the screen in front of me and gloat. Yes, it's a nice design on multiple fronts. Like the z8/9, I don't love the fold out fragility, but at least it flips. 😁

      My experience with a month testing the R5 was that it will put a point on the eye and showed green in full sensor view when manually focusing, yes. But, it did not track the eye at 100% zoom with a button press keeping it centered as I perfected focus zoomed in fully. Have they added that too? If so, then kudos to Canon too. That's the part that feels like cheating with the Zf and a lens like the 50 1.0 Voigtländer.

      @@HudsonHenryPhoto The box follows the eye and the focus indicators give continuous feedback of the acquired focus status within the box. I would have trouble doing the composition desired when it goes dynamic, and I just see a zoomed in crop which follows my motive, but milage may vary. Have you tried the Techart TZM-02 autofocus adapter? I find it’s a neat way to get close with manual focus then let the AF adapter get you the rest of the way. I half-action the shutter release while manual focusing until the adapter takes it home. The AF range is limited but for a touch up focus while manually focusing, it’s fairly decent.

I can zoom in but only on the back LCD and it's a bit clunky of a workload. Just went back and looked at it again and realized I could select what portion of the screen was active. Don't know how I missed that the first time around.
